Tested Technology
October 2019

Installing the projector was a breeze.

Unlike cheaper projectors, the zoom and focus wheels are geared together, so that altering the zoom retains the focus. A nice touch of class.

At 25dB, in eco mode this is one of the quietest projectors Tested Technology has reviewed so far.

The clearest example (as you might say) of 4K’s superiority is when you’re using the projector to display still images from a decent digital camera.

It’s solid technology from a creditable projector company with a deservedly huge share of the world market.

The UHD51 delivers an impressive brightness of 2400 lumens. The image quality of the Optoma UHD51 is very sharp and natural. The brightness is sufficient for the image width of about 2.6 m. When I close the outer shutters completely and turn off the light, then the picture is perfectly bright and wonderfully clear.

"The Optoma UHD51 is a perfect projector for movie nights in our opinion. Especially in darkened rooms, the picture knows how to shine and creates a true cinematic feeling. The biggest strength of the projector is the high resolution, combined with the good color representation.”

The snazzy compact projector is a dream to live with. It weighs just 5.22kg, and is small enough to hide away when not in use. Another model that uses clever pixel juggling technology to create a 4k image, the picture quality is impressive here. Keep to the cinema image preset for the most satisfyingly sharp and vibrant pictures.

Its movie performance is strong, especially given the price, but its sports handling scores too, thanks to Optoma’s PureMotion processing.

Optoma hasn't just sliced the price of 4K projection, it's made 3D cool again

Brilliantly priced, a rock-solid performer and with just enough setup flexibility not to make installation a chore, Optoma's UHD51 certainly shakes up the home cinema projection market. 4K UHD has unapologetically relegated Full HD to the cheap seats, and offers a level of performance that would frankly have been unthinkable for the price, even a few months ago. It's well appointed, capable of extreme clarity and even makes 3D fun again.

This low-cost UHD projector uses an XPR (eXpanded Pixel Resolution) 0.47-inch DMD chip to produce 4K images. It’s a sharp performer, with a strong colour performance and low noise.

There are two HDMI inputs, as well as PC VGA and USB. There’s a fair amount of additional configuration on offer. Multiple gamma settings are available, and there’s variable colour gamut selection. A six-segment RGBRGB colour wheel claims to cover 100% of the BT.709 colour space.

Images are pin-sharp and colour accuracy is superb. Black level can be tweaked using the Dynamic Black setting. We preferred it Off, however some might like the denser blacks it produces. For the greatest contrast, keep the lamp setting on Bright.

In terms of setting up the projector, it was an absolute breeze.

This image was taken in daylight and I was really impressed with the quality.

The picture is insane.  The quality is unbelievable.  The depth in the blacks is brilliant – I wasn’t expecting that! And the brightness, the vividness and the detail is absolutely just crazy good!

But if you are in the market around £1500 mark then definitely consider the UHD51 and UHD51A because they are stunning. They are really great value for money.

I can highly, highly recommend these two projectors

July 2018

Optoma UHD51 is an extremely well-equipped and exciting low cost projector with UHD resolution that would have been four times as expensive just a few years ago.

It is a low cost projector with reproduction technology best suited for HDTV and streaming material in a normal, non-dark room, like a living room.

When it comes to colours, the UHD51 is impressive, achieving the HDTV color space exactly at Rec.709. Optoma claims to be able to produce 100% Rec.709 and 80% of the larger DCI-P3 biocolor space.

The UHD51 is honest and gives an unexpectedly fine color reproduction within the HDTV-colour space that is standard today on Blu-ray movies, HDTV broadcasts and most of that material which can be received streaming.

The Digital Fix
July 2018

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, really punched through with the space-based scenes looking stunning. However, what really impressed was the final act sequence on Crait - the blood red on pristine white contrast as the speeders whipped up the surface of the planet was stunning and the colour depth provided by the UHD51 made this look better than even the cinema presentation.

Our short time with the UHD51 got us excited for the potential of 4K projectors. For £1499 you can't get more screen for your money - it's a bargain - and you won't be disappointed with shelling out that much cash for it.

June 2018

“Put it up, turn it on and enjoy it!  The Optoma UHD51 makes it very easy to get to a great home theater experience very quickly. It had a considerable range of functions - especially the support for 4K and HDR content- this projector is phenomenal"

+ Accurate color reproduction

+ Catchy Menu structure

+ Price/performance very good

HL, Suffolk : United Kingdom, April 2019.Purchased from Sevenoaks Sound and Vision
Bought this projector as our family love films. The initial setup wasn't ideal, using a Roku 4k streaming stick and an analogue amplifier for audio. The Roku HD content would stutter, making the viewing difficult and bringing on motion sickness. Switched the source to a raspberry pi kodi setup. Much better and HD content was great. Finally upgraded to UHD Bluray. This is by far the best option. Action is nice and smooth and together with a screen the 90” screen beats all UHD TVs. Just need to upgrade the audio for the ultimate in home cinema. Setup is pretty straightforward with HDMI and options for flipping the image around. The sound of the fan can be a bit annoying when there are quiet scenes. Overall a great projector for UHD for the price.
